The Azimut Benetti Group, world leader in the production of super yachts, is the first company in the nautical sector to have signed an agreement with Mive Eco for the supply of exhaust systems equipped with the SCR system for the reduction of harmful emissions generated by propulsion. Mive Eco, a company already world leader in the production of exhaust gas systems, starting this year will integrate its systems with the SCR systems of Hug Engineering, a company also a leader in its market segment.

An agreement with the world’s leading manufacturer of super yachts which is set up as a real innovation for the sector. In fact, the collaboration with two excellences such as Mive Eco and Hug Engineering will allow Azimut Benetti to guarantee the possibility of purchasing a « low emission » version for its models over 24 metres.

Mive Eco has integrated this latest generation SCR into its plants, offering Azimut Benetti a complete system of all connection pipes, risers, support structures and highly performing insulation in order to guarantee perfect operation, compliance with back pressure, surface temperature on the components and the safety of the yacht, despite the limited space available.

The need is to meet the limit level for NOx emissions defined by IMO as « Tier III » which, starting from 2021, has been extended to yachts of less than 500 gross tonnage and longer than 24 meters, and has become a mandatory requirement to navigate in ECAs (Controlled Emissions Areas).

Years before the entry into force of the new emission limits, Azimut-Benetti had asked its supplier of exhaust lines Mive Eco to integrate an « SCR » in the engine room for at least 8 yacht models, without any reduction of the areas habitable space or garage volume and impact on engine power.

Mive Eco had taken up the challenge by involving Hug Engineering, its historical partner, which has been supplying its best-in-class products to the main shipyards in the European area since 2016, when the IMO TIER III emissions standard had entered into force for all yachts over 500 gross tonnage.

Mive Eco reworked its exhaust systems and simultaneously Hug Engineering finalized the development of a completely new “CCV” (Cordierite Coated Vanadium) catalyst, which, after 3 years of laboratory and bench tests, was “deliberated” managing to meet performance targets in the limited space of an engine room.

Once it was understood that the system could work properly, Hug Engineering started the certification process in order to obtain an EAPP certificate compliant with the IMO TIER III standard based on the IMO Tier II engine. In this way it is possible to use SCR in the ECA area and possibly use the Tier II version engine in areas where it is not yet easy to refuel AdBlue (Urea) on board.

To date it is possible to state that the joint efforts undertaken between 2020 and 2021 by the three companies involved, Azimut Benetti, Mive Eco and Hug Engineering, have made it possible to achieve the objective of having a feasible solution both technically and commercially, which can be immediately offered to any customer interested in buying an ecological yacht, having full freedom to sail anywhere in the world and being able to count on the full value of the vessel at the time of resale.

Mive Eco a intégré cette technologie SCR de dernière génération à ses installations, offrant ainsi à Azimut Benetti un système complet comprenant tous les raccords, colonnes montantes, structures de support et isolation haute performance afin de garantir un fonctionnement parfait, le respect des contre-pressions, la température de surface des composants et la sécurité du yacht, malgré l’espace disponible limité.

Il est nécessaire de respecter la limite d’émissions de NOx définie par l’OMI comme « Tier III ». Cette norme, étendue depuis 2021 aux yachts de moins de 500 tonneaux de jauge brute et de plus de 24 mètres, est devenue obligatoire pour naviguer dans les zones à émissions contrôlées (ZEC).

Des années avant l’entrée en vigueur des nouvelles limites d’émissions, Azimut-Benetti avait demandé à son fournisseur de lignes d’échappement Mive Eco d’intégrer un système « SCR » dans la salle des machines d’au moins huit modèles de yachts, sans réduction de l’espace habitable ni du volume du garage, ni impact sur la puissance du moteur.

Mive Eco a relevé le défi en faisant appel à Hug Engineering, son partenaire historique, qui fournit ses produits haut de gamme aux principaux chantiers navals européens depuis 2016, date d’entrée en vigueur de la norme d’émissions TIER III de l’OMI pour tous les yachts de plus de 500 tonneaux de jauge brute.

Mive Eco a retravaillé ses systèmes d’échappement et simultanément Hug Engineering a finalisé le développement d’un tout nouveau catalyseur « CCV » (Cordierite Coated Vanadium), qui, après 3 ans de tests en laboratoire et au banc, a été « délibéré » pour atteindre les objectifs de performance dans l’espace limité d’une salle des machines.

La deuxième vitesse, celle du catalyseur, est celle de l’individu du « système » à un degré d’adaptation à l’intérieur du moteur, à moins de 50 cm d’altitude, résistant aux sollicitations mécaniques élevées qui doivent atteindre une vitesse supérieure à 30 kn et une température jusqu’à 500°C.

Mive Eco et Hug, après des mois d’études, ont développé les premières versions de systèmes d’échappement intégrés avec SCR compact adaptés aux yachts de plus de 24 mètres et de moins de 500 GT.

Une fois le bon fonctionnement du système établi, Hug Engineering a entamé le processus de certification afin d’obtenir un certificat EAPP conforme à la norme IMO TIER III, basé sur le moteur IMO Tier II. Il est ainsi possible d’utiliser la SCR dans la zone ECA et, éventuellement, d’utiliser le moteur Tier II dans les zones où le ravitaillement en AdBlue (urée) à bord est encore difficile.

À ce jour, les efforts conjoints déployés entre 2020 et 2021 par les trois entreprises impliquées, Azimut Benetti, Mive Eco et Hug Engineering, ont permis d’atteindre l’objectif : une solution viable, tant sur le plan technique que commercial, immédiatement proposée à tout client souhaitant acquérir un yacht écologique, naviguer librement partout dans le monde et valoriser pleinement son navire à la revente.
